EIOA Organised EROC at Calcutta Medical College Academy Building



Kolkata: Eastern India Optometric Association (EIOA) was established in the year 2002 by a group of dynamic young optometrists, who are the true lover of optometry and they believe that optometry is the only profession that can give us a blind free world as well as can give us a very stable respectable profession. The aim of the association is to unite all the optometrists under one umbrella and provide proper knowledge and upgradation of the Optometry profession.

The committee members have always taken initiative to organize different CME programs and workshops for the revolution of the fraternity. EIOA celebrates world optometry day annually to cherish the novel profession by conducting eye screening camps and other social awareness activities. The activities of social awareness programs and social works by EIOA continue throughout the year. 

EIOA commemorated its glorious 22 years with a grand optometry conference “Eastern Regional Optometry Conference (EROC) – 2024” at Kolkata, West Bengal. It is the 11th conference of EIOA for the upgradation of optometrists of Northern India, Eastern India and North Eastern India on 22nd of December 2024 at “Calcutta Medical College Academy Building”. 
Alike last year a pre conference workshop was organized by EIOA on 21st of December 2024. Each workshop was organized in different entrenched eye hospitals of Kolkata with well equipped infrastructure & facilities, where the facilitator demonstrated theoretically and practically by providing hands-on to the participants individually.

1st Center for the pre conference workshop was “TRENETRALAYA” which conducted SMILING CORNEA @ Live surgery demonstration, where 40 delegates participated.

2nd Center for the pre conference workshop was “DISHA MAHANAGAR” which conducted on DIABETIC RETINOPATHY, 25 delegates participated in it. 

3rd Center was “SANKARA JYOTI EYE INSTITUTE”. They conducted a workshop on BIOMETRY BLUEPRINT: BUIDING A FOUNDATION FOR CATARACT SUCCESS where 30 candidates participated.
4th Center was “PUSHPANJALI EYE CARE ”. They conducted a workshop on GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSIS BY EVALUATION OF PERIMETRY AND OPTIC DICS in which 35 delegates participated.

22nd of December 2024 was the day of Conference. The conference started with inauguration of program by 7 eminent guests on the dias. Padmashri Shri Vipin Buckshey, Director of Visual Aids Center and former optometrist of the Hon’ble President of India. Dr. Ashim Shil, Medical Director, Vivekananda Mission Ashram Netra Niramay Niketan. Dr. Pankaj Rupaliaha, Medical Director, Rotary Techno Netralaya. Dr. R. K. Kumar, Visiting faculty Shankar Netralaya, Chennai. Optom. Ajit S. Limaye, Associate Professor and Head, Dept. Of Optometry. Dr. Pavan Venkicharia, Scientist and Head of Myopia, L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Optom Gagan Sahni, Director, Silverline Labs Pvt. Ltd. Debashis Mondal, Associate Professor and President Eastern India Optometric Association. Optom. Sujit Banik, Vice-President Eastern India Optometric. Optom. Madhumita Deb, General Secretary, Eastern India Optometric Association as well as eminent optometrist of Rotary Techno Netralaya. Optom. Debasish Saha, Organising Secretary Eastern Regional Conference 2024. 

Conference started with felicitating the guests & a welcome song. The guest of honor was Padmashri Shri Vipin Buckshey who inaugurated the program by enlightening the Lamp along with other guests and dignitaries.

Twenty renowned companies participated with their instruments and equipment at the stalls and also presented new instrumental techniques to the delegates. 400 delegates registered and attended the conference. 

There were 28 papers presentations. Apart from this, there were 7 Poster presentations and 5 Model presentations. The interns also participated by giving poster and paper presentations on different topics.

The speakers presented scientific papers and shared experiences of different cases and managements on latest and knowledgeable topics for modern optometry and clinical practices. 

Four workshops were organised in the conference day at the venue. First workshop of the day was LVA (Advanced Treatment Procedure For Low Vision) by Optom Ajit S. Limaye. Second workshop was on Scleral Contact Lens by Optom Gagan Sahni, Third was on Geriatric Optometry by Dr. R. K. Kumar and fourth on Myopia Control by Dr. Pavan Venkicharia.

At the end of scientific sessions there was an interesting quiz contest for the student and interns followed by prize and award distribution ceremony. Firstly Optom Amit Pal and Optom Sanat Kumar Roy was honored with Lifetime Achievement Award by our President Dr. Debashis Mondal for their inestimable contribution towards the optometry fraternity and the work they have served for years in this profession. Then after there was ranked prize distribution for scientific paper presentation, poster presentation and model presentation for student and interns praticipants. 


At the end of the conference a small cultural program titled “DRISHTIKALA” was organized for some refreshment and entertainment with songs and dances representing different states of India. 

The support and contribution of all the Delegates, Guests, Speakers, Sponsors, Staffs of the Calcutta Medical College, Kolkata Police, KMC and Well Wishers towards the conference who made it a grand accomplishment.
