Medica Superspecialty Hospital celebrates the strength of prostate cancer survivors

Kolkata, 29th September 2024: In observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Medica Superspecialty Hospital organized an inspiring event celebrating cancer survivors. Titled ‘Celebrating the Men in Mettle,' the gathering aimed to spotlight crucial aspects of prostate cancer, providing valuable information and raising awareness about early warning signs. Nearly 25 survivors shared their powerful journeys, offering hope and motivation to others. The event featured insights from Dr Abhay Kumar, Head of Urology and a Specialist in Uro-Oncosurgery & Robotic Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

Prostate cancer is among the fastest-growing cases of early-onset cancer over three decades. Sadly, the disease often gets misdiagnosed and mistreated, thus posing big challenges. Early diagnosis and confirmation are important in this aspect. Early-onset prostate cancer has been increasingly diagnosed at the rate of 5% per annum.

The event and the interactive session took the viewers through clinically oriented topics ranging from defining the symptoms of this cancer to the technicalities of managing the same for well-being.

During the session, Dr Abhay Kumar, shared, "Several myths surround prostate cancer treatment, fuelling unjustified fears. Prostate cancer is usually easily treated and can be curable in many cases. Today, advancements in surgical technology - with artificial intelligence combined with surgery robots - have revolutionized prostate cancer care. Such technological advancement enables accurate management of frequent issues, like incontinence to urine. Our priority is always the removal of cancer while preserving the quality of life of the patient, and the service rendered by robotic technology has produced incredible results. Some may feel that doing such surgery with robots is an expensive affair, but Medica has successfully carried out robot-assisted surgeries on patients from varied backgrounds. The accessibility suggests that anyone from any strata can use this latest technology. Other than this, patients and their families have had to often travel to some other town or city for such an advanced medical procedure. Now, our hospital is providing the best medical treatment right here, which mitigates this pain for cancer patients and their families by not having to travel to another city or town."

In recognition of the vital role that support plays in the fight against cancer, Dr Abhay Kumar and his team have launched - the Prostate Cancer Support Group in 2023. This group gathers monthly to share their journeys with those currently battling prostate cancer, providing motivation and camaraderie.
