New technique in pacemaker implantation now at Woodlands

31 July 2024: Left bundle pacing, a relatively new technique in pace maker implantation, was performed for the first time at Woodlands recently for the first time. Also called, Conduction System Pacing, the procedure has several advantages over the conventional right ventricle pacing, like maintaining better electrical and mechanical synchrony.

The patient, 68-year-old Mr Gautam Mukherjee, had presented with a complete heart block necessitating a pacemaker implantation. According to Dr Avishek Saha, consultant, interventional cardiology, Woodlands, who treated Mr Mukherjee, he had poor cardiac conductivity, a condition in which Left Bundle Pacing is considered a preferred mode of treatment.

“Left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) is a physiological pacing technique that treats bradycardia (a condition where a person's heart rate is slower than normal) caused by sinus node dysfunction or atrioventricular block. LBBP is performed by placing a ventricular pacing lead deep inside the interventricular septum,” said Dr Saha.
On the second day after surgery, Mr Mukherjee has felt very fit and absolute good health. Mr Mukherjee, a retired official of the state forest department, was discharged two days later and is doing well.
“At Woodlands, latest as well as well-researched advancements in medicine, both in terms of equipment and techniques has been adopted. This helps us offer the best and safe treatment available to the patients.
