August 26, 2023, Kolkata: HelpAge India organized a sensitization program on Parkinson's disease and Dance Movement Therapy (DMT), an alternative treatment to reduce stress, in association with the Parkinson's Disease Patients Welfare Society at Kalyan Ashram, an old age home, for elderly women in Kolkata. Residents of the home, and patients of the Stationary Health and Physiotherapy units of HelpAge India Kolkata, attended the program.
Kalyan Ashram is HelpAge India's first age care facility in the eastern region, for elderly women in Kolkata. It has all essential amenities, access to healthcare services and physiotherapy care and provides support through a toll-free elders' helpline.
Sharmila Majumder, Territory Head-West Bengal & Northeast, HelpAge India, spoke about the awareness program and the need for such homes. "Parkinson's is a degenerative disease with virtually no cure. Therefore, early recognition, therapy and awareness can help patients experience a better quality of life. Our program aims to train communities and impart knowledge on providing care for patients in an enabling environment. HelpAge has established model homes for senior citizens. Residences such as Kalyan Ashram, are a home away from home for disadvantaged elders, where they can live their later years with dignity, have access to all the basic amenities and also often find a family to call their own. We celebrate all festivals with the elderly women of the home, care for them and empower them through digital literacy workshops and encourage them to develop their inherent skills, along with providing healthcare through our mobile healthcare program.”
